Happy, Healthy 2018, Beauty Heroes Tribe!
At the end of last year, I decided to bid adieu to our cute Superhero masks that came with each beauty discovery and replace them with our monthly #Herogram card, featuring the Hero product and an inspirational quote. We also upgraded our paper to be 100% recycled stock. From that first step, I made a promise to look for new ways to use less every day. It’s a daily practice, and I’m far from perfect, but we’ve made changes that have benefited personal and environmental health, and our company has scaled consciously and sustainably. It feels good, so I’m going to keep going, and I’d love for you to come along!
My intention going into 2018 is simply this: To love more. Love my team and family more. Love our customers more. Love the planet more. I realize that when I come from a place of love, I naturally need less, and I’m more conscious about what I use.

But First, Where It All Started
While today I am sharing 8 ways to LOVE MORE in 2018, I want you to know that in the beginning, it started out small. My desire to create a service that slows down beauty discovery and consumption originated from personal observations. Years ago, as a Spa Director, I started to hear from our customers that they were overwhelmed with the number of products in their beauty cabinets. I also saw this first-hand in girlfriends’ bathrooms and indeed, in my own. I noticed how more products didn’t equate to a better experience (or better skin). So, I had the idea to create a service that would slow down beauty discovery and deliver the healthier beauty, in a focused, educational and intentional service that values quality over quantity. My intention in taking a more mindful approach to beauty discovery is to inspire a movement to live lighter, discover products that you love, and use less of what you don’t.
Everyday I think about how I can reduce consumption in my personal and professional life. It’s a conversation I feel called to ignite. In November, we released a short video featuring a group of brand founders whom I admire to talk about conscious consumption. Each founder is focused on sustainability in their own way, and they weighed in on what Use Less. Love More. means to them. If you haven’t seen it yet, below is the 3-minute video that, as my friend Yael says, is all about thinking what you are saying ‘yes’ to.
I loved creating this video, and view it as a conversation starter for the most important conversation of our time – consumption. And I’ll be honest, these conversations aren’t always easy to have, even within my own family, as we look at our day-to-day decisions. But, there’s no denying that our planet depends on it.
We’re here to help you Love More. And when you do, you’ll use less. I promise. Below are 8 ways to love more, and we commit to consistently supporting you in this:
Education
Without full understanding of what a product is intended to do, how it works and how to use it can lead to product abandonment, waste and a desire to just find the next ‘thing’. Beauty Heroes is committed to creating a personal connection through education. When we are connected to our products and we understand what we are using on our skin, we turn routine into ritual and we savor our experience. This tends to lead to loving more and using less.
Slowing Down
We focus on delivering one brand, one Hero product at a time. We slow down beauty discovery so you can take time to incorporate this product into your routine, and see how it works for you. Incorporating one new product into your routine at a time will likely lead to a richer experience, and you’re more likely to see the positive results in your skin and in your life.
Less but Better
I take pride in taking my time. Committing to identifying one Hero product and properly studying its ingredients, efficacy and experience takes a thoughtful approach, and it’s what sets our service apart. The Beauty Heroes discovery process is intentionally slower, and it results in a deeper, educationally-rich experience that is meant to be savored.
Sustainable Ingredient Sourcing
It’s a jungle out there when it comes to ingredient sourcing, and all ethical brands we work with share in the same struggle to find natural ingredients that are affordable, effective and sustainably sourced. Whether it is Laurel Whole Plant Organics ‘slow beauty’ approach to sourcing, SkinOwl’s journey abandoning an ingredient altogether in order to be in alignment with their values, Kahina Giving Beauty’s long history of supporting women’s cooperatives in developing their ingredient supply chain, or Anima Mundi’s support for indigenous healers and farmers, each one of our Hero brands sources ingredients based on their own values. We love them for this, and we know you will too.
Get What You Need When You Need It
The top reasons our subscribers cancel is because they have too much product, and to that we say Bravo! We hear it all the time and we applaud you for taking a break from our service when needed, and coming back when you are ready. Which brings me to…
Standing Discount vs. a Sale
We love a good sale, but we don’t believe that a time-sensitive discount should be the motivation to buy. This is a cultural norm that we’ve all embraced, but it often leads to waste. Our Members enjoy the benefits of our Loyalty Program – a standing 15% discount every day. Without the pressure to act fast and buy now!, Members can shop for what they need, when they need it.
‘One Size Doesn’t Fit All’
You may have noticed that each order you receive, whether it be our beauty discoveries or beauty store orders, is packed in an appropriately sized box. Because why would we send you a small product in a huge box? Our small team packs each order intentionally, using the minimal amount of packaging necessary to deliver your order safely and beautifully. Minimizing our footprint is a constant focus for us.
More Ocean, Less Plastic.
“If philanthropy isn’t a part of your business model, you’re doing it all wrong.”
These words from Danielle LaPorte rocked me, and it inspired my 2018 commitment to give back. While there are several causes I’m drawn to, there’s one single global issue that really weighs heavy on my heart and I know that I’m called to become an activist for this cause: our oceans. Our oceans connect and affect everyone on this planet. Polluted oceans have dire consequences, and it’s 100% preventable.
I’m excited to announce that we will partner with the 5 Gyres Institute, an organization that empowers action against the global health crisis of plastic pollution through science, education and adventure.
Each month, a portion of our profits will be donated to support 5 Gyres and their work.
This year you can expect to hear more about how to love our planet more and reduce plastic consumption and take action to inspire others to do love more too!

The first is Saturday, March 24th, when Beauty Heroes will be holding our very first live event, a day of experiential and educational Master Classes by some of our esteemed beauty brand founders.
The second, is Saturday April 14th, when you will be invited for a day of inspiration and environmental impact on the North Shore of O’ahu, where I grew up. Join me and my family and our extended ‘ohana from Honua Skincare as we head to Hawai’i for Spring Break and spend a day in nature, learning, communing and practicing using less, and love more together.
